History of Hospice

In the early 1960’s Dame Cicely Saunders pioneered the hospice movement in England by creating a home for dying persons where her focus was to help patients live fully until death and to comfort always.

Her trip to America in the late 1960’s helped to jump-start our nation’s first hospice programs.

Grassroots movements began across the USA and hospice programs were developed to meet the needs of the dying in our community. Today there are over 3,000 hospice programs across the country.
